We’ve always known how lucky we are to live in an area of such natural beauty. Breathtaking and stunning, we try to find as many ways of staying outside as long as we can, and our visitors feel the same way! Smith Mountain Lake (and the Roanoke area in general) is our own little parcel of paradise, offering water activities, hiking trails, and to the delight of many, more than a few #1 ranked East Coast mountain biking trails that are challenging, exciting, and filled with those take-your-breath-away views of which we can’t get enough!

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve

Located about 43 miles outside of the Smith Mountain Lake, the drive to get to Carvins Cove Reserve and its five top mountain biking trails is a scenic one. Drivers may want to pull over a few times to fully experience the beauty, but don’t take too long; you won’t want to miss a moment of biking on our award-winning trails! Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is home to over 12,000 acres of woodlands, lakes, and even borders 14 miles of the world-famous Appalachian Trail, but it’s the mountain biking we’re focused on today!

Starting with The Gauntlet, you’ll find yourself gathering speed as you roll down 2 miles of wonderful. Speed demons will find their happy place on this trail, but for those who truly want to be challenged, the Hi-Dee-Hoe goes up, down, and all around; it’s only 1.5 miles long, but we think you’ll be ready for a break once you’ve conquered it! If not, the Rattlin’ Run is exactly what it sounds like it would be. Nearly 2 & 1/3 miles long, this trail is not for the faint of heart or weak of knee! The Songbird smooths out, featuring 2 miles of fast paths that are really good for the moderate to expert riders to handle. And finally, the fifth but not the final trail – Roanoke offers quite a few more trails that take top honors, but these five are our favorites! – the OG Line isn’t a long one, but it is rumored to offer the best jumps in town! A half mile of jumps, turns, and war cries is the perfect way to end your time exploring the trails of the East Coast Mountain Biking Capital, don’t you think?
