It happened almost 75 years ago, but for those who landed on Normandy Beach on June 6th, 1944 and survived to tell the story, the memories will never die. Depicted in all too realistic form in the movie Saving Private Ryan, as well as many other movies throughout the decades, D-Day is honored in a variety of ways throughout our country and Europe. Even thought it is a small town, Bedford D-Day Memorial is one that has become quite renowned in the 17 years since it was first built. Located just a short distance from your Smith Mountain Lake Properties home, a visit to the memorial is a worthy way to spend an hour or so of your weekends away from work.
Dedicated by President George W. Bush
The D-Day Memorial is visited by over 60,000 people from all walks of life every year, and from the youngest visitor to the most esteemed one (President Donald Trump is rumored to be paying a visit to the Memorial this June), everyone who steps foot onto its 88 acres walks away with a new understanding of the importance of that long-ago day in June. The monument itself stands 44 feet tall and bears the code name of the invasion carved into its surface and features a reflecting pool at its base, as well as various bronze statues depicting the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country on the shores of Normandy.
The Bedford Boys
As you will soon discover, the town of Bedford is a small one, boasting approximately 6000 residents, so you may be wondering why it was chosen to home the D-Day Memorial. Bedford had an even smaller population 74 years ago, and the battalion of young men who were sent to Normandy was very large, considering the size of the town. Numbering 30 in total, 19 of those brave soldiers lost their lives on that bloody day. Representing everything that is uniquely American, and having suffered such a huge loss, Bedford was an ideal place to hold this special monument.
